Are you doing your pelvic floor exercises correctly? π€ • . • Research tells us that 60% of women incorrectly contract their pelvic floor muscles when verbally cued (Thompson O’Sullivan, 2003) • . • It would be such a shame if you wasted your time potentially doing ineffective pelvic floor exercises, or worst case scenario, doing more harm than good to your pelvic floor - so always best to get a pelvic floor check π • . • Pelvic Floor Ultrasound is a great screening tool to check you are doing your exercises correctly. If you haven’t had your pelvic floor checked before, pop in to see a pelvic physio, it will be worth it’s weight in gold π #pelvichealth • . • On another note - you may notice in this video that the shape of the base of the bladder (the base of the black space in the center of the screen) is asymmetrical with the right side sitting a little higher than the left. Let me try and explain this to you π€ π½: • . • Just like you have a left and a right glute π, you also have a left and a right pelvic floor. Just like one glute can be tighter than the other (i.e your right glute can be tighter than your left) the same can occur in your pelvic floor, we refer to this as an overactive pelvic floor • . • In this ultrasound video you can see that the pelvic floor on the right side of the screen sits higher than the left, from assessment we know that this is because one side of the pelvic floor is tighter than the other. You will also see that during a pelvic floor contraction the right side of the screen lifts up higher than the left. Just like one glute can be stronger than the other, the same can occur in the pelvic floor. If the pelvic floor is too asymmetrical i.e one side is a lot weaker than the other, /or one side is a lot tighter than the other, this can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction, and low back, pelvic girdle, hip pain. So a pelvic floor check is not only important for those with pelvic floor issues but also for those with niggles in this area • . • Just to wrap things up it’s important to know that the best way to properly assess the pelvic floor is via an internal examination. However, the ultrasound can be a great first step to better pelvic healthπππ«
