Like a lot of alcoholic drinks, it started off as medicine. The liqueur's inventor, 19th century French pharmacist, Emile Giffard, made it as a tonic to settle one's stomach. It eventually made its way into homes and bars for recreational use. • When making a batch at home, feel free to use a mid to low-range vodka, the addition of mint and sugar is enough to overpower the taste of the neutral base spirit. It's good enough to sip on its own and it's a key component of the classic cocktail, the Stinger.
