We kick things off with the 1920s. • In 1922, Eck Robertson began the recorded history of Country Music with Henry Gilliland and Victor Talking Machine Company when they recorded Sallie Gooden b/w Arkansaw Traveler”. In 1925, Vernon Dalhart had Country Music's first million record seller with The Prisoner's Song. In 1927, country music really kicked off when Ralph Peer recorded Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family (along with 17 other artists) during the Bristol Sessions (Both of these artists will be featured in the 2nd installment) and Jimmie Rodgers became country's first superstar. One artist of note from this era that I didn't get on the playlist is Vernon Dalhart, considered the first country star. The track list is below. • 1922: (00:00) Eck Robertson - Ragtime Annie • 1923: (03:32) Fiddlin' John Carson - The Little Old Log Cabin In The Lane • 1924: (06:17) Henry Whitter - Wreck Of The Southern Old '97 • 1925: (09:29) Kelly Harrell - Rovin' Gambler • 1926: (11:56) The Skillet Lickers - Dance All Night With A Bottle In Your Hand • 1927: (14:42) Uncle Dave Macon - Sail Away Ladies • 1928: (17:39) Harry Haywire Mac McClintock - Goodbye Old Paint • 1929: (20:29) The Bently Boys - Down On Penny's Farm • I loosely followed 4 rules when I put together this playlist: • 1. I must like the song, I only included songs that I enjoy listening to, which meant at times the huge hit of a given year might not be included. • 2. The track needs to have made some impact on the billboard charts (during the chart years). It didn't have to hit number 1, but it needed to have made some impact. • 3. It should be a good representation of the sound of the era, so this mostly eliminated any one off throw back or novelty hits. • 4. One song per artist in the entire playlist. • Note: Songs are included in the year they were first released, not necessarily their peak year on the charts. • Thanks for watching.
