Supplies: • A few lemons • Baking soda • Food coloring • Dish soap • Plate or bowl • Craft sticks • Extra lemon juice (optional) • Directions: • 1. Cut a lemon in half and place it onto a plate or bowl. • 2. Use a craft stick to poke holes into the lemon. This helps the reaction happen faster. • 3. Next, drop a few drops of food coloring onto the lemon. Use one color or multiple colors. Or set up a few different lemons trying both ways • 4. Pour dish soap over the top of the lemon. • 5. The chemical reaction can happen slowly, if you want to help speed up the process, pour some lemon juice on the top of the lemon, as well. • 6. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda onto the top of the lemon and use a craft stick to press some of the baking soda down into the lemon. This will help start the eruption • 7. Add additional baking soda to the top of the lemon after the lemon erupts to continue the reaction. • Scientific Explanation: • The citric acid from the lemon juice reacts to the base of the baking soda and creates a gas called carbon dioxide. This is an example of a chemical reaction. The dish soap exaggerates the reaction, causing even more fizz and bubbles. • This activity is from our Nature Book Flood.
