I’ve just finished painting a Ducati 900ss. My friend wanted some candy and sparkles and I’ve done all that using a 1K clear. My question is, can I finish off the fairing with decals using 2K clear coat?” • Yes, you definitely can. 1k clear coat is where you don’t need to add a hardening agent and it just evaporates and dries. 2K clear coat is where you need to mix an additive, which is a hardening agent, to make everything catalyze properly. • The answer to your question is yes, definitely. It’s just like spraying clear coat over a single-stage enamel paint job. You can put a 2K clear coat over a single-stage clear coat or base coat. • You just need to make sure that you sand it a little bit. Scuff it with 1500-grit, provided that the paint is really dry. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a chemical reaction. • You need to give it a couple of days to make sure that the paint is really dry. Then, scuff it lightly. You don’t need to do this, but I recommend that you do. • When laying on your clear, I recommend that you dust it first with about 28-29 pounds of pressure coming out of your spray gun. Then, wash. • On the next coat, dust it heavier where you have pretty much a medium gloss. If that looks okay, let it dry for 15-20 minutes before you lay another heavy coat of clear on it. • It’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint.
