We compare the performance of several popular microphone preamps, including the CloudLifter and the new Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd gen, to see what works well and what doesn't when paired with the legendary Shure SM7B dynamic microphone. • Jump to @13:42 to see the results. • Tested mic preamps include: • Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen (new version) • Sound Devices USBPre 2 • M-AUDIO M-TRACK II • Saramonic Smartrig • Cloudlifter CL2 • Zoom H6 • Zoom H1n • While I am primarily looking at the Shure SM7B microphone, you could likely apply these results to a range of dynamic microphones, including the EV RE20 and Shure SM57. • I should note, I did not touch on the implications of impedance, warmth, or subjective aspects of a microphone preamp. The SM7B supposedly can get warmer in tone when paired with certain preamps, but even if that is the case, that may or may not be desirable. I have owned a cheap mixing board in the past that had preamps that imparted a bad sound on the SM7B, but the vast majority of preamps I've used have been relatively transparent. • To check out my side project, visit https://skindeep.ai
