We are back at Rock Island Auction Company with Keith Ford and Paul Levy, who show us two cutaway World War II guns: a M1 Garand and an M1 Carbine that have had a lot of their metal and wood removed to reveal exactly how all their internal parts operate. Cutaway guns are classroom demonstrators used to help customers, soldiers, gunsmiths, and small arms repair technicians understand exactly how a particular firearm functions. The history of these Rock Island guns isn't known. They started life as standard production rifles, but the guys are pretty sure they're not ex-military pieces. Whoever did the cutaway work was very skilled: everything functions beautifully. On the Garand, you can see the trigger mechanism, the op rod /gas system, and even the cam piece on the bolt so the delay before the op rod unlocks the bolt is clearly visible. Nothing is concealed on the M1 Carbine either - you can see just how compact its action really is. We're not likely to see any more of these cutaways made. With the current prices of original Garands and M1 Carbines, who wants to cut up a perfectly good rifle to make one? • A binge-watcher’s dream! MORE Brownells videos: http://www.brownellsvideos.com
