Ammonia #R717 • Latent heat of vaporization= 1315 kJ/kg (at -150C) • Reacts with copper and bronze. • Application in large compression systems, cold storage, ice-cream and ice plant, breweries. • b. Carbon Dioxide #R744 • Latent heat of vaporization= 574 kJ/kg • Evaporator pressure = 20.7 bar • Condenser Pressure = 70 bar • Application: ships • c. Sulphur dioxide #R764 • Latent heat of vaporization= 396 kJ/kg • Corrosive to steel. Sulphurous acid. • Leak detection using ammonia swab. • Application: foods and beverages • d. Air #R729 • e. Water/ Ice • 2. Organic Refrigerants • a. Hydrocarbons: #R290, #R600, #R600a • b. Halocarbons: #R11, #R12, #R13, #R22, #R134a • c. Azeotropes: #R500 • 1. Primary Refrigerants: R12, R717, R134a etc. • 2. Secondary Refrigerants: • They are Cooled by primary refrigerants • E.g.
