This is webinar series hosted by Healthcare Systems Modeling Simulation Affinity Group of Society of Simulation in Healthcare . http://www.ssih.org/Interest-Groups/H... • Speaker:  • Eric Goldlust, M.D., Ph.D., FACEP , Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University • Summary:  • Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is a methodological approach to analyze inefficiencies in operational practices, but remains infrequently utilized in healthcare. DES allows a safe, controlled environment to model and visualize operational strategies prior to potentially expensive and hazardous process interventions.  As such, DES improves on regression modeling and queueing theory, which cannot address the complexities and variability in patient flow and clinical practice.  •   • We will discuss the nature of DES, its basic structure, and vital steps and pitfalls in building robust models.   We will focus on prior research applying DES to the healthcare, and future directions for DES research.
