When the retina is damaged, surgery is often needed. Two major problems that require retina surgery are macular disease and retinal detachment, both of which create blurriness in a patient's field of vision. Speedy diagnosis and surgery is vital. An untreated retinal detachment could lead to vision loss, explains Ron Adelman, MD, professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale Medicine. Wrinkled macula and macular holes are also treated with retina surgery. Retinal laser surgery, meanwhile, is an effective treatment for diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Adelman notes that Yale Medicine has been active in developing cutting-edge approaches to retinal conditions.
