Pollarding a Tree

To pollard a tree is to cut it back to better harvest its wood in a more sustainable fashion. It is a practice similar in concept to coppicing. • The wild black cherry tree in my backyard was not a productive one, at least not for me. The small berries it produced were much too high in the canopy for me to harvest, and though it provided food for birds and other wildlife, it took up space and cast shadows that would be harmful to other plants and trees I had growing. • While there are many ways to pollard a tree, the method I'm using in this video is not a recommended way for many types of trees. In fact, this wild black cherry may not be the best choice for it and it could actually kill the tree. I'm hopeful it won't, but will instead allow it to regrow, but at a scale more suitable to a backyard orchard. • In the video I discuss the different ways to pollard a tree and show you how I've chosen to do mine. It's a method I first saw on the site Edible Acres, though Sean did it with a black locust tree. • • Pollard - Managing First Year Regrowth • He also recommended an article on the practice of pollarding and coppicing, which I'll share below: • https://midwestpermaculture.com/2012/... • Share this video! • • Pollarding a Tree • • Subscribe to my channel for more great homesteading ideas • http://www.youtube.com/user/ruggedhom...
