I wanted something that could cool on its own. • This is a decent machine, but it’s rather slow. It definitely gets cold enough to freeze ice cream, but it takes quite a long time to do it. It’s also kind of small, so it’s really only suitable for small batches. It makes 2-3 servings, based on how we’ve used it. • The instructions don’t mention pre freezing the machine before you use it, but I had much better results after we let the thing run for 30 minutes before adding the chilled ice cream. The first time we used it, we followed the instructions and put the chilled mixture in the bowl and turned it on. It took so long that by the time the ice cream was ready, the ice crystals had grown too large because it churned so long and the texture was a bit off. We ran a second batch using the same mixture (our recipe was too big for one freeze cycle) in the already-cold bowl, and it turned out much better. You don’t need to put the top on to chill the bowl. All you need to do is turn it on and it will start chilling. If you don’t want to listen to the motor turning, you can cover the open bowl with a folded towel to help insulate it so it gets colder before you add the ice cream mixture. • It is supposed to stop on its own according the instructions, but ours has never stopped on its own. If you try to let it run long enough for the paddles to stop, you’re going to get big ice crystals. It’s better to just check on it periodically to see if it’s ready and stop it when it’s the right time. • If you pre chill the bowl and stop it when the ice cream is ready, you will have great results. • The motor is very small, and the mixing paddle seems a bit flimsy to me, but it still does the job pretty well. It’s very nice to have a machine ready on demand and can be used repeatedly for successive batches, unlike the cheaper ones with the bowl that you need to freeze overnight and only get one shot.
