PARAKLETOS What does it mean

Parakletos is the greek word that John used when Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit, mentioned 5 times in the New Testament. In English, you might hear the word “paraclete” as a noun in reference to the Holy Spirit. But when translating the word “parakletos” for English readers there are 4 words used: • In the NET Bible, parakletos reads as “Advocate,” “Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever–“ (John 14:6) • In the CSB, we see “Counselor,” “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.” (John 14:26) • In the NASB, it’s “Helper,” “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,” (John 15:26) • In the KJV, we find “Comforter,” “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7) • But the 5th time it’s mentioned, each of these versions translate it the same way, speaking of Jesus, “Advocate,” “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (1 John 2:1) • Though each translation is slightly different, we gain a good understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, a comforter, helper, advocate, and counselor. But we can also be confident in the translators’ choices, as we see in 1 John 2:1, that they take context into consideration when choosing the English word that best captures the meaning of the original Greek. Jesus IS our advocate with the Father, standing at His right hand continually interceding for us!
