In circa 1954 or 55, Buddy Holly, along with his duet vocal/songwriting partner Bob Montgomery, performed/wrote/recorded their country bop/bluegrass'esque songs, sometimes with Sonny Curtis on fiddle. One of those occasions marked a clear change and statement of intent by Buddy, when his more rockier side was beginning to come out. They recorded a superb duet called Down The Line , which has a kind of rockabilly vibe and a superb blues based riff, which Buddy used in variations, on Holly Hop, Baby Let's Play House, Ting-a-Ling, That'll Be The Day etc - this riff and chords for the song Down The Line uses E, A B7 chords. Their demo recording of the song may have been when Buddy was still using his Les Paul Gold Top, before he took it back to the music shop in his home town of Lubbock, and bought his first Fender Stratocaster (not sure if he part traded in the Les Paul). • Here I use my Harley Benton, a 335 based semi hollow. I do love sunburst guitars, but it wasn't until I received this guitar from Thomann in Germany, that I realised it was kind of similar looking to Niki Sullivan's Gibson ES-225TD, as seen on the front cover of The Chirping Crickets album. • Here is the riff from Down The Line, I also use Holly Hop and Baby Let's Play House as examples, to demonstrate Buddy's use of this riff type, in other songs he recorded. I hope it helps someone to learn the riff. Any questions, just ask in the comments section - Pete. • #buddyholly #buddyhollyandthecrickets #peggysue #ohboy #buddyhollyguitar #raveon #blues #rockabilly #guitarriff #buddyhollyriff
