It quotes the Generalmarsch of the Austro-Hungarian Army. • It is similar to the theme of Beethoven's Symphony No.5. • 2nd movement • There are many shared elements between the first and second movement. A sighing motif heard in the 1st movement becomes more prominent in the 2nd movement, and leads into the first theme with the violin's violent movement. • 3rd movement • Enlarged sonata form scherzo, the longest of all these movements. The central scherzo develops several waltz and ländler themes. • 4th movement • The Adagietto is scored for only the string section and a solo harp. The 4th movement may be Mahler's most famous composition and is the most frequently performed of his works. • Because it is a beautiful movement full of tranquility, it is also known as the love movement . • It is said to represent Mahler's love song to his wife Alma. According to a letter she wrote to Willem Mengelberg, the composer left a small poem : • Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne, • ich kann mit Worten Dir's nicht sagen. • Nur meine Sehnsucht kann ich Dir klagen • und meine Liebe, meine Wonne ! • In which way I love you, my sunbeam, • I cannot tell you with words. • Only my longing, my love and my bliss • can I with anguish declare. ーWikipediaー • 5th movement • The horn, bassoon, and clarinet interact idyllicly while the afterglow of the 4th movement remains. • At the end of the short introduction, the first theme , which is characterized by a gentle descending figure by the horn, and the second theme , which is not busy with the low strings, are presented, and these are combined with the contradictory tune. It gradually develops like a fugue. • The brass chorale that appeared and disappeared like a phantom in the second movement is now confidently reproduced, and at the end it speeds up and ends brilliantly. • Enjoy your practice ! • Subscribe to my channel ! • Score library → / @scorelibrary2704 • • https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.5_...) • Claudio Abbado (conductor)
