Health policy planners throughout the developed world are bracing for large increases in the number of elderly individuals. U.S. life expectancy is now at 79 – a historical high – and unprecedented number Americans are breezing into their 80s, 90s and beyond. Although this poses challenges for society’s health care and social welfare policies, it also presents opportunities. How well people fare in late life and what they have to offer others can be enhanced through their behaviors and choices, which in turn are shaped by policies, programs, and social programs. • This health policy forum navigates this terrain with the aid of two nationally known voices. Lesley Stahl is one of America’s most recognized broadcast journalists. She has been a correspondent for CBS News’ 60 Minutes for twenty-five years. Stahl has just released a new book entitled, Becoming Grandma, where she uses her journalistic skills to investigate the joys and science of new grandparenting. Professor Laura Carstensen, PhD, Founding Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, has brought widespread attention to the issue of how well are Americans preparing for long life. In February, she released a benchmark report, Sightlines: Living Long, Living Well in 21st Century America, that was featured in the February issue of TIME Magazine. The conversation is moderated by Paul Costello, chief communications officer, Stanford School of Medicine. • http://med.stanford.edu/healthpolicyf...
