Sometimes paintings that I do, don't generate a spark so I will set them aside for a while, see if I can do something with them later and if that does not work, I will reuse them. • It's a pretty simple process to reuse a canvas. • 1) sand down the high spots on your painting. • 2) give it a coat or two of titanium white. • That is it. not really much else to it. • As for the oil painting itself, this is a #masterstudy of tonalist master, J. Francis Murphy's Late Afternoon. It is nearly a monochromatic painting with high contrast. • I tend to construct my paintings from the top down. This makes it easier to when painting foreground elements because you don't need to worry about going back in and painting around things later. Just put in the sky and paint on top of it. • Another thing to remember, when you are painting water with a pallet knife, be sure to keep that top edge of you knife parallel to the horizon. This will keep the water from looking like it is going to run off of the canvas and onto the floor. • I have tried to make these videos a little shorter by speeding them up in some areas.
