Zootherapy Using Animals to Heal

Some of the most renowned health gurus in the health community often speak about the herbs and the plant knowledge that they have received from indigenous people. Not often, if ever, do they speak about animal derived medicine. One aspect of why they probably don’t is because of access to such medicines and their marketability. I believe mainly it is the ideology and social pressures of modern western culture that tends to paint indigenous cultures through a plant based lens. • The reality is that all traditional and indigenous groups living off the land have utilized all kingdoms of life, for not only food but potent and useful medicine. Zootherapy, or using animal derived medicines, has not been given the proper spotlight as most of the focus has been heavily based on plants. Much less are people aware that there are compounds that have been extracted from animals that are currently being used as pharmaceuticals. • Much like plants produce certain compounds that are beneficial to humans so too do animals. Looking at animal foods and their derivates as medicine is certainly not the popular trend these days but for indigenous and traditional cultures it would have been a practical reality. • Simply put nature was the grocery store AND the pharmacy and all kingdoms of life were utilized responsibly and sustainably for the balancing of the people’s health and wellness. • Stay Balanced. 🪶 • (Note for SJW: I am not advocating the rampant and irresponsible participation in these animal medicines as some are currently endangered, this is for educational purposes only and strives to bring a balancing perspective on indigenous traditional medicinal practices) • #zootherapy #animalmedicine #animalfoods #healing #indigenous #traditionalmedicine #nativemedicine #wild #staybalanced
