In the Nicene Creed we state that we believe in one, holy, CATHOLIC, and apostolic Church. In the Apostles' Creed we state that we believe in the holy Catholic Church. • What does Catholic mean? • Why is the Roman Catholic Church a Catholic Church? • The Meaning of Catholic • The word catholic comes from the Greek word katholikos, which means universal, or literally on the whole. • We might think of the meaning of Catholic, therefore, in two ways: • Little c Catholic • Little c catholic can be used as a term to mean universal. This is the way in which we use the term Catholic in the Nicene Creed. We believe in a universal church that welcomes everyone in the whole world. • Big C Catholic • When we write capital C Church, we refer to the Roman Catholic Church. • The term Catholic Church appears in the writings of many of the early Church Fathers including Ignatius of Antioch (AD 107), Cyril of Jerusalem (4th century), Augustine of Hippo (4th-5th centuries). • In general, these writers used the term the Catholic Church in comparison to other churches that were disconnected from a bishop or heretical.
