Produced for a broadcasting on Saturday, 26 October 2024 on Radio Libertaire at 89.4FM to the Paris and its surrounding suburban area. • Von Magnet was founded in London in the mid-1980s by Phil Von, soon joined by Flore Magnet. Their beginnings coincide with the London post-industrial wave (Bourbonese Qualk, Test Dept, Psychic TV…), and they are easily associated with this scene as they share the same rehearsal spaces, squats, and living places. • Yet, from the start, Von Magnet distinguishes itself through its multidisciplinary approach, presenting itself less as a simple band and more as an artistic collective. They integrate not only musicians but also visual artists and dancers, dedicating themselves to performances that blend dance, theater, projections, installations, and performances. Their subtle mix of flamenco—incorporating vocals, jaleos, guitar, zapateado, and palmas—with elements of industrial, electronic, as well as Middle Eastern music and other musical traditions from around the world makes them a true musical UFO, inimitable and unclassifiable. • Although the discographic history of the project concludes with their final album Archipielagos in 2012 on the Ant-Zen label, followed by a double DVD gathering video archives of their performances, Von Magnet will forever remain etched in memory as an extraordinary group in the realm of industrial music and an essential reference in the French alternative music scene. • Since then, aficionados can now turn to Meta Meat, an electronic and tribal duo led by Phil Von and Hugues Villette.
