Playlist: Krantzstone - • Music to FIGHT FASCISM to • [Lyrics below] • __________ • 'UnFortunate Son' • '60s rock and roll jingoistic pro-military anthem with a catchy guitar riff • v3 • April 10, 2024 • __________ • Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, • O'er the land of the free, they're the chosen ones. • But when the rockets come to the Gaza sky, • They ain't the ones to take the brunt, it ain't right. • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no, • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no chosen son, no. • Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand, • Living in comfort in the Promised Land. • But when the dust settles on the Gaza Strip, • They're safe in their homes, while others can't live. • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no, • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no chosen son, no. • Yeah, some folks inherit stars and stripes, • Flying high over lands of strife. • While they cheer from the sidelines, safe and sound, • Others are falling on the battleground. • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no, • It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no chosen son, no. • And when you ask them, Why the pain and the fear? • Well, they just shrug and say, It's always been here. • ____________________________________________________ • Dedicated to John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, who signed a letter in support of Israel, but is conspicuously silent on the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank. • I asked Bing Copilot to write a parody of 'Fortunate Son' but referencing the Gaza genocide, after learning that John Fogerty was stanning for Israel... which is ironic given that he wrote and performed 'Fortunate Son' as a searing indictment of privileged children of US politicians dodging the Vietnam War draft while the children of working class Americans were forced to fight, to kill, and die on foreign soil for a war they didn't even understand. • Yet Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's current Minister of National Security, is a fascist so extreme that not even the IDF would allow him to serve (thus allowing Ben-Gvir to live long enough to be the chickenhawk that he is). • Lt. Col. Shlomi Riesman has also accused PM Benjamin Netanyahu of avoiding serving in the first Lebanon War 40 years ago by moving back to the US to cheerlead the war from the safety of US soil. • I would argue that chickenhawks should not be allowed to cheerlead any war, let alone a genocide. • __________ • Also, this song was written specifically about the US cheerleading and supplying lethal aid to Israel to continue to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza (and the West Bank). Hence the line Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, O'er the land of the free and Yeah, some folks inherit stars and stripes, Flying high over lands of strife i.e. the US, and the US flag on the weapons flying over lands of strife i.e. Palestine. • The next lines explicitly mention But when the rockets come to the Gaza sky, / They ain't the ones to take the brunt, it ain't right , and While they cheer from the sidelines, safe and sound, Others are falling on the battleground. i.e. Americans aren't hurt by the rockets the US makes and gives to Israel while cheering on the Rafah 'offensive'. And saying that's not okay. I think Americans would care much more about where their tax dollars (and weapons) are going, and who and what they're being used for, if those same weapons were suddenly being used against us. • The kind of privileged isolationism of the West in general is perfectly encapsulated in the idea that nations in the Global North that benefit from conflicts around the world, including genocides, do so because those weapons aren't being used against us. So it makes it very easy to cheer on these conflicts, as evidenced by the weapons manufacturer employee recently caught on video pulling a gun on anti-war protesters picketing outside the company. • The song is talking about the moral cowardice of Americans to continue to supply lethal aid to a nation committing genocide because Americans aren't the target.
