His orchestra became the house band at The Cotton Club, succeeding Duke Ellington. He became a star nationally in a short time due to the regular radio broadcasts, and became know as the “Hi-de-ho” of jazz, one of the most popular vocalists of the swing era. • In 1931 he recorded the original version of “Minnie The Moocher.” Few listeners knew that he was singing about opium use. The “hi-de-ho” call and response with the band (which was soon taken up by audiences) became his trademark and made him into a sensation. This remarkable, fully restored and remastered clip from the early 1950s shows him at his peak leading a quartet with Milt Hinton on bass and Jonah Jones on trumpet. • He reached the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades, the 1930s to the 1970s. • Calloway was the first African-American musician to sell a million records and to have a nationally syndicated radio show. • His song Minnie the Moocher was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and he posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. • #CabCalloway #MinnietheMoocher #JazzPerformance • Stay in touch with us! • 📹 YouTube - @arkadiarecords • 🗣️ Facebook - / arkadiarecords • 📸 Instagram - / arkadiarecords • 🎶 Bandcamp - https://ArkadiaRecords.bandcamp.com • 🌍 Our website - https://arkadiaconcerts.com
