The shortest path from an electric outlet - through a door frame - to a refrigerator in another room is to be found. The problem is first reduced to analogous geometry in optics -- treating the two end points as source of light and object. The door frame itself then plays the role of a mirror! Thanks to Monsieur Fermat the wire goes through without a hitch!
