It is ritually used by indigenous people for healing and divination. In recent decades, the use of ayahuasca in syncretic religions, neoshamanic rituals, wellness services and psychonautic practices has propagated worldwide. Internationalization and commercialization of ayahuasca has resulted in the emergence of 'analogs' of ayahuasca (brews with substitutes and/or additives) that may be offered to unknowing participants. • • We collected samples of 'ayahuasca' brews from several countries and cultural contexts and analyzed their chemical composition by HPLC-MS and comparative analytical methods. Concentrations and proportions of main bioactive compounds (N,N-DMT, harmine, tetrahydroharmine and harmaline) varied considerably. The use of non-traditional plants (e.g., Peganum harmala, Mimosa tenuiflora) was widespread in neoshamanic context. Moclobemide and bufotenine were found in two brews offered as ayahuasca. • • Results show that the variability of 'ayahuasca' is extensive. The 'medicine' received in a neoshamanic 'ayahuasca' ritual in Europe is likely to contain non-traditional additives and/or substitutes. Development of complementary risk reduction strategies is essential, and could benefit from raising awareness among users, self-regulation among facilitators, availability of affordable and reliable testing services, and open data sharing. • • • • • The Finnish Association for Psychedelic Research is a multidisciplinary association founded in December 2016 with the goals of promoting scientific research related to psychedelics and the availability of accessible information based on such research. • We encourage you to become a member – more info at http://psyty.fi/mukaan.
