The molecules that react to make up the chain are called monomers. The reaction that forms the polymer is called a polymerization. If the polymer contains a pattern of monomers, then the smallest section of the pattern is called a repeat unit. A polymer made from just one type of monomer is called a homopolymer. Polymer chains that include multiple different monomers are called copolymers. Copolymers may or may not have a distinct repeat unit.
