The Bessemer process, was the first inexpensive process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron, before the development of the open hearth furnace. • The Bessemer's converter is a cylindrical steel pot approximately 6 meters(20feet) high, originally lined with a siliceous refractory. • The key principle of the Bessemer converter is the removal of impurities from the iron, by oxidation with air being blown through the molten iron. • The invention in England by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas, of what is now called the Thomas Gilchrist converter. Which was lined with a basic material, overcame the problem of not effectively removing the phosphorus present, in most British and European iron ore by the Bessemer's process. • Watch the video for a better understanding of the Bessemer converter process in steel making.
