The Portuguese Man o' War is a species of siphonophore, a group of animals related to jellyfish that is most usually seen in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. • 2. They are not a jellyfish, but it's actually a group of 4 different species, or zooids, that are dependent on one another to survive. • 3. The Portuguese man o’ war was named because of its resemblance to 18th century Portuguese warships. • 4. They can be identified by their balloon-like float, which can be blue, violet, or pink and rises up to six inches above the water. • 5. The Portuguese man o’ war’s tentacles grow as long as 165 feet (50 m), which can sting and paralyze small fishes crustaceans by delivering a powerful sting. • 6. Man-of-war stings can be extremely painful for humans, but they are rarely deadly. However even dead man-of-wars washed up on shore can deliver a sting. • 7. The Portuguese man o’ war doesn’t swim.
