The Earth's crust is fragmented into numerous blocks that we refer to as tectonic plates. The lithospheric plates move as coherent units in relation to the other plates, and while the interior of the plates may experience some deformation, the main interactions between the individual plates (and therefore the major deformation) occur along their boundaries.
