What is a marionette? What is the symbolism of the marionette? Why do we often use the image negatively? Why is it perhaps the most mysterious of puppets styles? This is a guided tour through many types of marionettes with video references from many theatres so that you can see how they move. I also show how they work and suggest ways of making simple versions to work with yourself. Marionettes have traveled around the world because, of all puppets, they seem to have the most independent life. And yet if you cut the strings?
