The Hawai‘i Book Music Festival is proud to present Master slack-key artist Makana in concert from historic Kawaiaha‘o, the “Mother Church” of Hawai‘i. Go to HBMF.online to hear Makana’s voice and music soar in that great space. • Makana • The last protégé of Slack Key Master Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has gone on to serve his community and the world as torch bearer for the uniquely Hawaiian art form. His music has been featured on 3 Grammy nominated albums while Guitar Player magazine rated him one of the top 3 guitarists in the US in 2008. Makana employs his talent and platform to serve more inclusive and sustainable social and environmental visions. He has supported global acts including Sting, Santana, Jason Mraz, Common, Gotye and Joe Walsh of The Eagles, performed for the Obamas' White House, and penned anthems for Occupy Wall Street and other progressive movements. Makana is currently workshopping an original musical intended for • Broadway. • Ken Makuakane • Producer • Kenneth Makuakane, the producer of the HBMF Makana concert from Kawaiaha‘o Church, is a songwriter (2000 songs), musician ( guitar, ‘ukulele, bass, piano and multiple percussion instruments), founding member of Mango and The Pandanus Club, and producer (almost 200 albums), working with renowned Hawaiian artists such as Nā Leo, Hapa, Obrian Eselu, Jeff Rasmussen, Willie K, Mākaha Sons and Grammy-nominated artists such as Amy Hānaiali‘i Gilliom, Hoʻokena, and Raiatea Helm. Over 40 years he has won 20 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and in 2015 was awarded the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts’ Lifetime Achievement Award; he has been nominated for three Hōkū Awards in the October 2021 awards show. An ordained Minister, the Rev.
