Gerstmann syndrome is typically associated with damage to the inferior parietal lobule of the dominant hemisphere. It is classically considered a left-hemisphere disorder, although right-hemisphere damage has also been associated with components of the syndrome. • What are the signs and symptoms of Gerstmann syndrome? • Gerstmann syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the loss of four specific neurological functions: Inability to write (dysgraphia or agraphia), the loss of the ability to do mathematics (acalculia), the inability to identify one's own or another's fingers (finger agnosia), and inability to make the distinction • Gerstmann syndrome is characterized by four primary symptoms, collectively referred to as a tetrad: • Dysgraphia/agraphia: deficiency in the ability to write • Dyscalculia/acalculia: difficulty in learning or comprehending mathematics • Finger agnosia: inability to distinguish the fingers on the hand • Left-right disorientation • How do you test for Gerstmann syndrome? • It is tested by requests like, Touch my index finger with your index finger and Touch your nose with your little finger . Left-right disorientation: this is confusion of the right and left limbs and indicates a lesion in the dominant parietal lobe. • Can Gerstmann syndrome be cured? • There is no cure for Gerstmann's syndrome. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Occupational and speech therapies may help diminish the dysgraphia and apraxia. In addition, calculators and word processors may help school children cope with the symptoms of the disorder. • What is finger agnosia? • Definition. Inability to distinguish or identify individual fingers of the hand. It is operationally defined by asking the patient to either name individual fingers or to point to fingers named by the examiner. • What is Acalculia condition? • Specialty. Psychiatry, Neurology. Acalculia is an acquired impairment in which people have difficulty performing simple mathematical tasks, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and even simply stating which of two numbers is larger. • Gerstmann syndrome causes: • In adults, the syndrome can arise in adults as a result of impaired blood flow to the brain (cerebrovascular disease) such as a stroke or other damage to the brain. The parietal lobes (upper side lobes) of the brain are affected in Gerstmann syndrome. • Gerstmann syndrome diagnosis: • Diagnosis may be clinical if associated with dementia and other etiologies. In cases caused by stroke, MRI will show a corresponding stroke in the inferior parietal lobule. In the acute stage, this will be bright (restricted diffusion) on the DWI sequence and dark at the corresponding area on the ADC sequence. • Gerstmann syndrome treatment: • There is no cure for Gerstmann syndrome. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Occupational and speech therapies may help diminish the dysgraphia and apraxia. In addition, calculators and word processors may help school children cope with the symptoms of the disorder • Gerstmann syndrome prognosis: • In adults, many of the symptoms diminish over time. Although it has been suggested that a similar diminishing of symptoms occurs in children as well, it appears more likely that most do not overcome their deficits, but instead simply learn to adjust. • #medicine #doctor #neurology #parietallobe
