LTE in unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) is an attractive alternative for network operators to take advantage of unlicensed frequency bands to accommodate the ever increasing mobile data traffic. 3GPP is standardizing this functionality as licensed-assisted access (LAA), which will become part of 3GPP Release 13.
