In 2023, violinist Johnny Gandelsman realized a longtime dream: performing J.S. Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, plus novel arrangements of the composer’s six cello suites, over a weeklong residency at The Met Cloisters. Through four consecutive nights in the resplendent Fuentidueña Chapel, Gandelsman paved a memorable journey through the behemoth pieces, infusing his own, folk-rooted voice through what he considers “some of Bach’s most personal and joyful works. • • — • • 0:13 Adagio • 3:32 Fuga – Allegro • 9:05 Siciliana • 11:36 Presto • — • • Johnny Gandelsman, violin • • Recorded on Monday, May 22, 2023, in Fuentidueña Chapel at The Met Cloisters. • • This performance was made possible by the Grace Jarcho Ross and Daniel G.
