(30 Sep 2021) MUSICIAN, ACTOR, ACTIVIST STING TURNS 70 • Musician, actor and activist Sting marks his 70th birthday Saturday (2 OCTOBER 2021) • Born Gordon Sumner on 2 October 1951 in Wallsend, north east England, the star earned his nickname early in his musical career, after a fellow performer spotted him wearing a yellow and black striped sweater. • Following a variety of jobs, including as a teacher, bus conductor, soccer coach and ditch digger, Sting went on to find worldwide fame as one third of 1970s trio, The Police. • Hits included Roxanne, Can't Stand Losing You, So Lonely, Message in a Bottle,    Don't Stand So Close to Me and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. • Over the years the star has embraced not only pop-rock and reggae but also jazz, country, Celtic and Middle Eastern strains. • Alongside his musical success, Sting also carved out an acting career, including an early cameo part in 1979 landmark movie Quadrophenia, and as the lead in 1982 Dennis Potter drama Brimstone and Treacle - which also led to a solo hit from the soundtrack, Spread a Little Happiness. • He released his first solo album in 1985, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, which included the hit If You Love Somebody Set Them Free. • A solo appearance at Live Aid and a second solo album ...Nothing Like the Sun followed - which included enduring fan favorite Englishman in New York. • Sting married Trudie Styler in 1992, and the couple bought their Wiltshire country estate Lake House, where the star wrote and recorded Ten Summoner's Tales. • Further acting roles included appearances in 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Threepenny Opera on Broadway in 1989 and musical The Last Ship - for which he wrote the music and lyrics. • Sting reunited with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland for a 2007 performance at the Grammys, and hit the road with The Police for a succesful world tour. • Sting has also teamed up with others to perform, including Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Shaggy - with whom he recorded grammy winning album   44/876. • One of the world's leading environmental advocates, Sting, with Styler, formed The Rainforest Foundation which promotes protection of the environment and indigenous peoples around the world. • Sting has won 17 Grammy Awards (and been nominated 45 times) and earned four Oscar nominations, for songs written for film.  He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000. • He has six children, four with Styler and two with former wife Frances Tomelty. • His latest tour in support of his 2019 solo album My Songs, was interupted by the pandemic.
