Got this one-loop clear for Week 2 of TRP-STGT 2017: https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic... • I found Last Resort to be a surprisingly decent game for a TRP-STGT pick. It is by no means flawless (more on that below), but it feels solidly constructed and nothing stands out to me as gamebreakingly terrible. The game is rather easy and slow-paced, which may bore more experienced players, but I think it would be a solid pick for a less-experienced player looking for an approachable horizontal shooter. It doesn't demand quick reactions or super precise movement anywhere (though there are some tight spots), making it doable to anyone willing to put in some practice. The checkpoints force the player to learn how to get past obstacles, but recovery is never too difficult. • Some things I don't like about the game: • 1. The excessive slowdown. When it gets really bad, the B button (which locks/unlocks the orb position) stops responding, making positioning the orb more finicky than it already is. • 2. When there's a lot of sprites on the screen the player sprite sometimes flickers and disappears. Despite how bad this sounds, though, this somehow never caused any real problems for me. • 3. I find the orb positioning a bit awkward. It kind of trails your movement but also tries to keep its distance from your ship, which can make it tricky to get it facing the direction you want without a lot of shuffling around. • 4. The second loop is far too similar to the first; the difficulty increase is so minor that the loop adds very little to the game aside from length. The loop doesn't need to be as sadistic as Parodius Da or Detana TwinBee, but it should at least be a fresh experience for players to (re-)learn, which really isn't the case here - the vast majority of my strategies from the first loop continued to work in the second loop with no change. • Overall, though, I found this game pretty enjoyable. Not the type of thing I would want to spend ages optimizing, but good for a quick and unstressful clear during an occasion such as TRP-STGT.
