English text created by John Sullivan Dwight, based on the poem Minuit, Chrétiens by Placide Cappeau in 1855. The Christmas poem was written by Cappeau at the request of a local parish priest, and reflects on the birth of Jesus and the redemption of mankind. On 24 December 1906, Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian inventor, broadcast the first AM radio program with him playing O Holy Night on the violin and singing the final verse. The carol was the second piece of music to ever be broadcast on radio.
