Deadly Air Show Disaster

The Ramstein Air Show disaster took place on August 28, 1988. 70 people died and hundreds were injured as a result of this terrible tragedy in front of a crowd of 300,000 people. The Italian Air Force demonstration team was set to put on a spectacular display. Lieutenant Colonel Ivo Nutarelli was callsign Pony 10 for the performance. As the the team began the pierced heart maneuver, Pony 10 increased his dive angle too much to complete the maneuver. This put him too low and on a collision course that he couldn’t avoid unless he had just flown himself into the ground.
