Reaction wheels are used to control the rotation of small satellites by altering their angular momentum (sometimes referred to as momentum wheels). By rotating the wheel in one direction, the satellite must rotate in the other direction with the same angular momentum in order to have a net momentum of zero (Law of conservation of momentum).
