In the first installment of our new video series Attracting Backyard Birds we learn what types of food and feeder to use to attract Evening Grosbeaks. • Evening Grosbeaks are year-round inhabitants of Canada's boreal forest. They may fly south in fall and spend winter outside of their normal range. While it's hard to predict where they might show up during winter, certain foods and feeders work best to attract these thick-billed finches. • Food Types: Sunflower seeds offer your best chance to attract Evening Grosbeaks. Their thick bills easily crack through the thin shells of black-oil sunflower. Evening Grosbeaks are also attracted to hulled sunflower seeds. This no mess option will reduce chaff underneath feeders. • Bird Feeders: Hoppers have a platform, walls, and a roof that protects seed against the weather. Use a large hopper feeder to attract Evening Grosbeaks. Evening Grosbeaks readily visit platform feeders. A roof and drainage holes help keep seeds dry during inclement weather. Tube feeders with larger ports and bigger perches will attract grosbeaks. Look for feeders with multiple perches to accommodate more birds. • Landscaping Tips: Evening Grosbeaks eat a variety of seeds and fruits. Plant ash, cherry, or crabapple trees to create habitat for this species. • Food and feeder illustrations by Justine Lee Hirten and Jillian Ditner. • Thumbnail: Evening Grosbeak by bellemare celine | Macaulay Library https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/480... • #birdcams #cornell #eveninggrosbeak #birdfeeding #birdfeeder #birdwatching #birding #birds
