Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, bon viveur, a successful playwright, and early 20th century celebrity in England. After a sensational trial at the Old Bailey in London, he received a gaol sentence of two years hard labour for gross indecency related to his homosexuality. He died in France at the age of only 46, but has never been forgotten, even today, owing to his outlandish lifestyle and controversial views.
