The E5 with dependents Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) that the VA gives veterans on their Post 9/11 G.I. Bill doesn't always match the E5 with dependents rate that the DOD is paying service members. The VA assesses BAH on the first of August of each academic year. If the DOD raises it's BAH rates during that year Veterans will receive the rate assessed on the first of August and not the actual rate that people in the military are receiving. • Using the defense travel site's BAH calculator can lead to errors for veterans.
