In Part II in our AK History series, we get into the Modernized Kalashnikov type rifles. Adopted in 1959 as the AKM for a fixed stock and AKMS for an underfolding, these variants are what really took off and went all around the world. The AKM was the firearm that secured Kalashnikov's place in history. It was designed to be faster, easier, and cheaper to mass produce compared with the original AK-47.
