(If It Fits Your Macros) • http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/nutri... • The dietary approach known as the IIFYM diet (short for if it fits your macros ) has become hugely popular in recent years as an alternative to the traditional 24/7 clean eating approach that most bodybuilders follow. This has sparked a huge clean eating vs. IIFYM debate, with opinions ranging all over the map on both sides. • What does IIFYM mean? Simply put, it states that as long as you're meeting your total daily needs in terms of macronutrient intake (protein, carbohydrates and fats) and micronutrient intake (vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients etc.), then it really doesn't matter which specific foods you consume in order to meet those totals. So, does IIFYM work? • Quick IIFYM Diet Review: • Ultimately, it's pretty hard to argue against the if it fits your macros concept, as the plain fact is that your body does not view your nutritional intake in terms of individual food items. It only sees the entire picture as a whole. Therefore, as long as your macro and micronutrient needs are being met, there's no good reason to suspect that consuming one set of foods over another will produce different results. • In the end, an IIFYM diet versus a clean eating diet won't really look much different anyway, as the only way to meet your macronutrient and micronutrient needs properly is to base your diet around traditional clean foods anyway. • The only main difference is that someone using an IIFYM meal plan (this concept is also sometimes referred to as flexible dieting) will usually allow for a small allotment of total calories (around 10-20%) to come from cheat foods as long as they fit into the diet as a whole. However, even typical clean eaters allow for cheat meals here and there anyway, so again, at the end of the day there isn't much difference between the two approaches.
