Before we put 2017 behind us, Andrew Rivera wanted to take one last look back at the best special effects of the year. • » Subscribe to NowThis Nerd: http://go.nowth.is/Nerd_Subscribe • Visual effects have come a long way over the decades, and in 2017 we have the capability to translate everything in our imaginations straight to the screen. When it comes to the introduction of movie CGI, before and after, special effects have always been a big factor behind the scenes, but the best of VFX creates a seamless illusion of special effects that might only be revealed in behind the scenes footage, making of documentaries, and any given VFX breakdown. From miniatures to motion capture, the magic behind the making of visual effects is a complex art form based on a century of evolution, and while it’s hard to impress modern audiences, there were still plenty of awesome special effects that took our breath away in 2017. • The Blade Runner 2049 visual effects went a long way towards making it one of the most beautiful movie of the year, and it’s a guarantee that it will make any top 10 special effects lists you might see. But for all the awesome CGI holograms and deaging in the Blade Runner 2049 vfx, the most impressive by far were the Blade Runner 2049 miniatures created by Weta Workshop. It’s one of the oldest techniques around, but with modern techniques it creates realistic, substantial scenes that most computers still struggle with. Another creation from Weta Digital turned human actor Andy Serkis into the Planet of the Apes Caesar, one of the most convincing digital creations ever seen. In War for the Planet of the Apes, Weta’s motion capture process has never been more impressive, and it was sad to see the trilogy end before we could see how much further they could take this damned, dirty ape. Marvel Studios delivered some impressive Guardians of the Galaxy special effects in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, visual effects that used cutting edge fractals to render the massive scope of Guardians of the Galaxy Ego the Living Planet. And finally, we have to remark on some of the awesome practical effects of 2017. In Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan used real World War II planes to film the intense Dunkirk dogfight scenes, all with an IMAX camera bolted to the wings. In Baby Driver, director Edgar Wright pulled off the incredible Baby Driver stunts and Baby Driver car chase with a bare minimum of CGI. When it comes to special effects, practical effects, and every kind of visual effects, sometimes it’s best to keep it real. • Get more from NowThis Nerd: • » Like Us: http://go.nowth.is/NowNerd_Facebook • » Tweet Us: http://go.nowth.is/NowNerd_Twitter • » Follow Us: http://go.nowth.is/NowNerd_Instagram • Get more from NowThis News: • » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe • » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook • » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter • » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram • » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat • NowThis Nerd is your one stop shop for everything from movies and TV to games and comics.
