Replacing the long-lived SLK-class roadster, Mercedes-Benz announces the SLC 300 and SLC 43 AMG. Slightly lighter and now featuring either a turbocharged 4-cylinder or biturbo V6 engine, the SLC aims to carry on Mercedes’ reputation in the luxury roadster segment. We want to know, will Mercedes’ move from the outgoing SLK 55 AMG’s potent V8 to a less powerful biturbo V6 result in a more balanced sports car? • The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine powering the SLC 300 makes 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The engine carries over from the SLK300, so fuel efficiency remains 25mpg city/32 mph highway. The now-top-trim SLC 43 AMG employs a new engine, a biturbo 3.0-liter V6. The new mill puts out 362 hp and 384 lb-ft, while maintaining respectable 20/29 fuel economy. Both engines are managed by a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and touch-shift manual mode. • Outside a redesigned front end and its new engine, the SLC retains much of the SLK’s characteristics. A new instrument cluster highlights the interior upgrades, and the roadster comes standard with a sports exhaust system. For all the practicality it offers, being a hardtop convertible does have it’s drawbacks—namely cargo space. The SLC provides drivers with only 6.4 cubic feet of trunk space with the roof down, and 10.1 cubic feet with the roof up. • Pricing for the SLC300 starts at $47,950 and $60,300 for the SLC 43 AMG.
