Recently Groove Magazine published an article called Korea's Black Racism Epidemic. It's a good article filled with several anecdotal stories of how several foreigners with dark skin have been treated in Korea. Personally I've always been treated with respect, but I've also seen one of my black teaching colleagues being refused entry into a local market to buy apples (2008) and another friend was asked by her students if they could lick her skin because they wanted to see if it tasted like chocolate. • As I've mentioned before, race relations in Korea is something akin to the 1940s in America. It simply just doesn't register that there are different people. I'm continually asked if I can eat spicy food, even though I come from a region of the world that has food significantly more spicy than Korea. In 2013, I was once more introduced to someone who said I was the first foreigner they had ever met. • The problem stems from foreigners in Korea hovering around the 2% population mark. Even then, most foreigners in Korea are from Asia, so visually, the difference is less than say with someone who is Caucasian or of African descent. Another problem, stems from the word 외국인 (waygookin). In Korea, that translates to foreigner, but a better translation is not Korean, as students will use the term when referencing people they meet while traveling in other countries ( I really enjoyed speaking with all the foreigners I met when I was in France ). • Given all the furor with the Coca-Cola ad, it shows that even a country like the US has a long way to go. Can Korea really be held to the same standard? What are your experiences in Korea or your country with racism. What's the best way to create a diverse society filled with respect? • Blog: http://www.qiranger.com/2014/02/10/ko... • = WEB SITES = • G+: http://google.com/+SteveMiller_QiRanger • Twitter:   / qiranger   • Facebook:   / qiranger   • Facebook Page:   / qirangeradventures   • Instagram: http://instagr.am/qiranger • Blog: http://qiranger.com • The Travel and News Channel:    / qiranger   • The Vlog Channel:    / theqirangervlog   • Podcast: http://qiranger.com/tqrap
