R.I.P. Charles Robert Watts [June 2, 1941 - August 24, 2021 - Aged 80 years] • “Dandelion” was recorded June-July 1967 at Olympic Studios, London and released August 18, 1967 in the UK on Decca Records and in September 1967 in the US on London Records. It peaked at #8 on the UK Singles chart and at #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] conversion from the original MONO recording. • Dandelion was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was originally released as the B-side to We Love You in August 1967. It contains lyrical references to British counting/nursery rhymes. • The first demo version of “Dandelion” was recorded in November 1966. Originally titled “Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue”, it had different lyrics and was sung and played by Keith Richards. On the released version, Mick Jagger sings the lead vocal. • The recording's arrangement makes use of baroque instrumentation; Brian Jones contributed a distinctive melodic figure played on oboe, while Nicky Hopkins performed on harpsichord. The two parts move in contrary motion, with Jones' melody ascending against Hopkins' descending pedal point. The song is in the key of B-flat major and in the 4/4 time signature . • The original single release fades out with a brief section of the Nicky Hopkins piano intro from the A-side, “We Love You”. The coda is missing on most versions of “Dandelion” appearing on compilation albums, which include the song in a 3:32 edit, but it may be heard, for example, in the 3:48 version included on Singles Collection: “The London Years” and “Through The Past, Darkly”. • Good friends John Paul provided the excellent and playful background vocals. • I was blown away by Charlie's drumming while working on the isolated drum track. The man was a human metronome!! He will be missed. I'm sure his legacy will go on for centuries • About my DES mix. • My MONO-to-STEREO mix is similar to the original stereo mix as it is very minimal with very little instruments. [There's not much you can do to it]. I kept the vocals centered as they were on the original stereo version, added a bit of stereo reverb and raised them 1 DB. I panned the drums right and had them reverb into the left and put a slight limiter on them to make them a bit more-punchy. I panned the harpsicord and oboe left and reverb into the right. I centered the bass and smoothed it by shaving out the boominess. • Technical Information: • I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Harpsicord Oboe, Drums and Bass into 4 separate tracks. Adobe Audition 2020 was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, Delay, EQ, and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video. • For more information on spectral editing and sound source separation, visit https://www.monotostereo.info/ • Enjoy my MONO-to-STEREO conversion of my favorite Stones hit: “Dandelion”. • This video is strictly for entertainment purposes only.
