Note(s): • Unless otherwise indicated, all times are set in local time, based on a 12-hour clock. • Aircraft Accident/Incident Overview: • The accident aircraft was a Boeing 757-223 and was delivered to American Airlines in 1991. The accident aircraft was registered under American Airlines as N644AA and was equipped with 2 Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4B engine(s). At the time of the accident the aircraft was 10 years old. • Air Accident/Incident Overview: • On the 11th of September, 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 took off from Washington Dulles International Airport, Virginia at 8:10 AM for Los Angeles International Airport, California. On board were 58 passengers and a crew of 6. Among the 58 passengers were 5 young men affiliated with Al-Qaeda. There plan was to hijack the aircraft, disable the flight crew, take over the flight controls and crash the aircraft into the Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Flight 77 would be one of four aircraft hijacked that day as part of the September 11 terrorist attacks. • At 8:45 AM, Flight 77 reached its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet. At 8:50 AM, the last normal radio communication was made from the flight crew of Flight 77 with the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). Between 8:51 and 8:54 AM, it is believed the aircraft was hijacked by the 5 young men affiliated with Al-Qaeda. At 8:54 AM the aircraft began to deviate from its assigned flight path and make a 270 degree turn to the south. At 8:56 AM the transponder was switched off by the hijackers and the autopilot is set on a course heading east towards Washington D.C. The Indianapolis ARTCC, as well as American Airlines dispatchers, made several failed attempts to contact the aircraft. At the time the airplane was hijacked, it was flying over an area of limited radar coverage. With air controllers unable to contact the flight by radio, an Indianapolis official declared that the aircraft had possibly crashed at 9:09 AM. • Little is known about how and when exactly the assault took place on board. Although both black boxes were found, only the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) provided useful information, the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) however, according to investigators, was too damaged and provided no relevant information. The only evidence that does exist are from two brief phone calls which came from a female flight attendant and a female first-class passenger. This occurred at between 9:12 and 9:30 AM. According to both phone calls, the hijackers used knives and/or box cutters to take over the flight, and that the passengers and crew possibly including either one or both pilots had been moved to the rear. No stabbings, passenger injuries and/or the threat of a bomb were mentioned by the female flight attendant and the female first class passenger. However investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation determined that the pilot of the flight was bludgeoned to death after conducting DNA analysis on his remains which would be retrieved from the crash site. • At 9:37 AM, Flight 77, flying at 460 knots, over the Navy Annex Building adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, crashed into the western side of the Pentagon. The plane hit the Pentagon at the first-floor level, and at the moment of impact, the airplane was rolled slightly to the left, with the right wing elevated. The front part of the fuselage disintegrated on impact, while the mid and tail sections moved for another fraction of a second, with tail section debris penetrating furthest into the building. In all, the airplane took eight-tenths of a second to fully penetrate 310 feet into the three outermost of the building's five rings and unleashed a fireball that rose 200 feet above the building. Everyone on board the aircraft, including the 5 hijackers perished and as well as 125 people in the Pentagon. • References: • Information: • https://aviation-safety.net/database/... • Image: • http://www.jetphotos.net/photo/6118887 • Air-Traffic Control/Cockpit Voice Recording(s): • http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/20...
