Learn more at https://www.movingimage.us/james-wong... • Notable Asian American cinematographers Michael Goi (American Horror Story) and Eric Lin (The Sound of Silence) discussed how James Wong Howe’s legacy influenced their careers in this virtual discussion. Wong Howe was one of the few Chinese Americans working in the American film industry in a career that ranged from the silent era through the golden age of the studio system and into the mid 1960s. • Michael Goi, ASC, ISC has compiled over 70 cinematography credits including Avatar: The Last Airbender, American Horror Story, Glee, and Salem. He has received four Emmy nominations for Glee, My Name Is Earl, and two seasons of American Horror Story. He was nominated for the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Award for the telefilms The Fixer and Judas and for the miniseries American Horror Story: Asylum. Goi is a past president of the American Society of Cinematographers, serves on the Board of Governors of the ASC, and is the editor of the 10th edition of the ASC Manual. He was made an Honorary Member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) in 2010 for his efforts to increase international collaboration and communication amongst the world’s cinematography organizations. Goi has appeared as a guest speaker at the American Film Institute, the University of Southern California, Walt Disney Animation Studios, CineGear, IBC, and many other international industry events. He is a member of the Directors Guild of America, the Academy of Television Arts And Sciences, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. • Eric Lin is a New York–based cinematographer. He fell in love with black-and-white photography in high school, which led him to dabble in filmmaking while studying sociology and film criticism at UC Berkeley. He continued to pursue his passion for visual storytelling at NYU's Graduate Film Program, where he earned his MFA in Cinematography. His feature film career started with Bradley Rust Gray’s The Exploding Girl, starring Zoe Kazan, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Since then he has worked on a broad range of films, including Adam Salky’s addiction drama I Smile Back, Brett Haley's music driven dramedy Hearts Beat Loud, and Michael Tyburski's sonically obsessed character portrait The Sound of Silence. He also shot Amend: the Fight for America, a six-part Netflix hybrid documentary series, hosted by Will Smith, that mixes traditional interviews with theatrical performances. He re-teamed with Adam Salky for the Netflix home invasion thriller Intrusion, starring Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green. His most recent film, Blood, directed by Bradley Rust Gray, was awarded a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Uncompromising Artistic Vision at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
