#joshesl #education #tesol • In this mini-lecture, I discuss the importance of comprehensible input (that you focus on and engage with), intake, noticing, and output for second language learning and acquisition. I argue that all four factors need to be considered in order to best facilitate second language development. I also suggest a few practical ways you can manipulate these factors to achieve the best results we can for our students. • NOTE: The idea that input of the passive kind is all someone needs to reach anything but rudimentary levels of language proficiency needs to be challenged, especially since there is little (if any) evidence to support this idea. However, this fact has not stopped a range of YouTube experts touting this nonsense. The fact is, input that is not consciously attended to, processed, and engaged with will not (in most cases) make it into your linguistic repertoire. • 00:00 Introduction to Input and Output • 01:27 Overview of Input for Language Learning • 02:00 What is Language Input? • 03:03 What Type of Language Input is Best? • 03:27 Comprehensible Input • 04:35 Consider the Goal of the Language Input • 05:13 Noticing the Language Input • 05:27 What is Language Intake? • 06:30 The Role of Language Output • 08:15 Summary of Language Input, Noticing, Intake, and Output • 09:15 Input for Language Learning Video Summary • Learn more here: • http://www.joshesl.com/the-importance...
